Say Owt & Apples and Snakes presents…
Talk in a bit : Hannah Silva album launch
Tuesday 15 May, 7.00pm
The Basement, City Screen, Coney Street, York YO1 9QL
Talk in a bit is the debut record by Hannah Silva, an award-winning writer known for her innovative and virtuosic vocal performances. Made during a week of improvisation, the album weave together Silva’s lyrical tapestries with the acrobatic drums of Swiss percussionist Julian Sartorius, the electronic virtuosity of Italian composer Luca Martegani and the noise distortions of Swiss cellist Zeno Gabaglio. This short tour reunites Silva and Martegani, and adds award-winning jazz percussionist Lionel Friedli to the mix.
We’re excited to present their truly original sound, experimental yet accessible: a marriage of music and words, atmospheres
and grooves, technology and grit.
This special event also introduces a short duet Pluto as Silva teams up with Japanese sound poet, Tomomi Adachi, who has designed infra-red sensor jackets enabling the vocal virtuosos to collide sounds and meanings through gesture.
Silva will be supported by new poems and music from York poet David Jarman.
In 2017 David was the Poet in Residence at the Great Yorkshire Fringe. He is currently writing a new play for Common Ground Theatre, to be produced in association with Young Thugs Records in 2018.
David will be presented a unique work-in-progress performance of his new solo show directed by Ruby Clarke and produced by Common Ground Theatre (@CGTheatreMakers)
“The vocal acrobatics of musician and writer Hannah Silva test the physical limits
of language” – The WIRE
“She uses techniques like cut-up and collage, sound poetry and physical theatre to create something that’s unique but nods to older forms like shamanism, pre-religious ceremonies, Dadaism, and the kind of games that children play with language” – Ian McMillan, The Verb, BBC Radio 3
